Stories have been conveyed, though not yet confirmed, that Alexander and Frederick's father had moved to Russia from Germany along with many other Germans to the promise of land -- ten acres and a house -- made by Catherine the Great. History and family story tells the promises were never quite met. See the American Historical Society of Germans From Russia website for extensive information about this historical movement. Review the Gorte Ancestor List from this website. It's also been told that this father of Alexander and Frederick's was a top official of Orenburg, Russia.
Alexander emmigrated at age thirty-three from Reinwald, Russia with his wife Marie and children to the United States/Saginaw, Michigan in 1909. They traveled the S.S. Estonia out of Libau, Russia, arriving May 9, 1909 to Ellis Island, New York, NY, USA.
Alexander died a retired farmer in Saginaw, Michigan.
